2020: A tribute to Van Eyck and the Flemish Renaissance
Flanders is a piece of art. Whenever you come to our region, there are 13.000 m² of cultural experiences awaiting. Our permanent Flemish Master offer will get an extra glance by some particular events in special venues, as in 2020, the spotlight will be on Jan van Eyck.
In 2020, it’s clear that your first stop should be Ghent, where the Ghent Altarpiece, his magnum opus, still adorns the St. Bavo's Cathedral. Since its creation, this masterpiece has been destined for the cathedral, and after restoration it now returns to its original location. In 2020, Ghent is honouring the painter and its masterpiece with 'OMG! Van Eyck was here', a captivating city festival with visual art, theatre, design, fashion and much more.
Ghent is your ideal starting point to travel around Flanders, where you’ll notice the influence of the Flemish Renaissance of Jan van Eyck in each art city you’ll visit.
The perfect addition for one’s visit is Bruges: the city where Van Eyck used to live. Moreover, in Bruges and Leuven one can admire the work of other Flemish Primitives. And in Bruges, Mechelen and Brussels one can visit the inspiring city palaces that served as the creative hubs of the 15th century.
We invite the international visitor to discover the craftsmanship of old and new masters in their original settings and to get inspired by this daring, brave attitude that still makes the DNA of Flanders’ people and culture today. While you can see works by Jan van Eyck and other Flemish Masters around the world, you’ll enjoy the most powerful experience in Flanders, where the spirit of these masters is still very much alive.
