'Antwerp Baroque 2018. Rubens inspires' city festival
The Flemish Masters are being celebrated for three years. Peter Paul Rubens is the first artist to be put in the spotlight. Antwerp is, of course, the perfect place to pay tribute to the grand master of Baroque and his legacy. It is the city where Rubens lived, worked and where his beautiful studio can still be admired. The city festival - commencing June 2018 - tells the story about Baroque, past and present, and fosters a dialogue between the historical Baroque and contemporary art.
Past and present
What happens when historical Baroque meets contemporary Baroque masters? You will discover surprising similarities between past and present. You will notice, for example, that Jan Fabre and Luc Tuymans, who just like Rubens, live and work in Antwerp, have unexpected international appeal. You then realise that the city has been a magnet for people from all corners of the world for centuries, to be here, to revel in the beauty, to make art. Art that crackles and sparks and surprises.
Come enjoy Baroque in Antwerp
Antwerp Baroque 2018. 'Rubens inspires' introduces you to the most beautiful places in Antwerp in a surprising manner. Chic and unrefined, historical and contemporary, metropolitan, yet pocket-sized. The cultural programme is pronouncedly extrovert and combines artistic individuality with folksy authenticity. Rubens' vital style is not only reflected in the museums, churches, parks and squares, but also the gesticulated market vendor, on a plate with an edible still life, among the racks of the Antwerp fashion designers and more.
Join in the celebration. Come to the opening weekend from 1 to 3 June 2018 or visit the city from June 2018 to January 2019. For the full programme, please visit www.antwerpenbarok2018.be
